‘Treat others as you would like them to treat you.’

1 Corinthians 8:1-7, 11-13. Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way—Ps 138(139):1-3, 13-14, 23-24. Luke 6:27-38.

Readings: Text

How remarkable to read—on September 11 of all days—this wise summary of folk ethics. Sadly, its wisdom is not yet ingrained in our humanity. It is as if individually and collectively we too easily overlook this guidance ‘along the everlasting way’. Perhaps the reality of original sin is to be found in our short-sightedness.

We need to take to heart this and other steps towards salvation in today’s readings. The psalmist encourages us to look for deliverance to God who knows us through and through. Jesus personalises this best of guidelines to right living by telling us, ‘Be merciful as your Father is merciful’. Guide us all, Lord, along your way, your everlasting way.
